Department of Trauma Care
Trauma has acquired great importance due to increasing traffic accidents.
However domestic accidents and animal attack injuries also contribute
significantly. No wonder trauma/accidental injuries are one of the leading
reasons for emergency hospital admission.
Trauma care has evolved according
to demand. As the type of trauma becomes more complex, the trauma care
facilities need to upgrade. The answer is simply Total Team work. Only a team of
experienced specialists can provide consistent quality care round the clock.
Any part of the body can be
injured and often many parts are injured. A single surgeon can never handle
this. In addition fully equipped operating room, experienced anesthesiologists,
laboratory, blood bank, X ray, CT scan and MRI are essential.
Vikram hospital has started its
Total Trauma care facility. It has now a full trauma care team for
managing all cases. A trauma receiving area also has been added.
In the last few weeks many
Poly Trauma cases have been successfully treated here. The details of these
cases and the extra ordinary skill and perseverance of the Team in fighting
against all odds and saving the life of a young boy are the evidence of a well
set facility.
The Total Trauma care Team
concept is here to provide the unfortunate victims, all the care, all round the
clock, with a human touch.
Vikram Hospital
which recently started the Total Trauma
care Team concept in Mysore city showcased the
benefits of this to the society, even as early as the first few weeks of its
inception. In the Press Conference held today, Dr Satish H V, Chief Co-ordinator
Department of Trauma Care, Vikram Hospital showed three poly trauma cases which
ensured three lives saved thanks to this Team effort. This is the only hospital
in Mysore city to have Resident Full time Plastic Surgeons, Surgical
Gastroenterologists, apart from Orthopaedicians, Neurosurgeons and Head and Neck
surgeons. Full time anesthetists working round the clock with expertise in
airway and emergency care treatment actually receive the patients at the
Emergency ICUs. This makes a phenomenal difference in patient outcomes said Dr
Vikram. The highlight was the lightening quick co-ordination between the Team of
Specialists and the support team like the full fledged Blood Bank with all
components, OT Nursing team, Critical Care Unit team, all totaling over 400
personnel. Saving the lives involved not just surgery but excellent post
operative care. Reaching such an Emergency care facility early is the key. Many
times the problems will still be minor and easier to handle if patients come in
the Golden Hour, Dr Satish added. Consequently, the cost of the treatment will
also be lesser. The multislice CT Scan, Mysores only such scanner, does a total
body CT with a color 3D rendering which allows the surgeons to practically see
into any organ spleen / liver, or even small blood vessels, or even detect
broken bones or spine or fractured skull. All this helps plan the course of
action like which surgery should be attended to first in multiple injuries. This
whole body scanning is offered at close to 35% of its actual cost for the
emergency patients.
