what is bariatric surgery?

bariatric surgery (etymology: greek words "baros," meaning "weight," and "iatrikos," meaning "medicine") is a surgery performed to induce long term weight loss this also cures most of the medical problems like diabetes, blood pressure, arthritis etc. this is not a cosmetic surgery.

how is it different from liposuction?

liposuction is a cosmetic surgery where few kilograms of fat is removed by suction for shaping the body. this is not for weight loss.

what is BMI?

BMI is calculated as weight (in kilograms)/height squared (in meters).

according to the BMI

    obesity category     BMI
    overweight     25-29.9
    obesity class i     30-34.9
    obesity class ii     35-39.9
obesity class iii     greater than 40

what can i do to reduce weight?

the options available are- diet, exercise, medicines and surgery.

what are the 3 most common weight-loss procedures?

1. roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure

  • stomach is stapled to create a small pouch which restricts the amount of food that can be consumed
  • a portion of small bowel is bypassed thus delaying food from mixing with digestive juices to avoid complete calorie absorption

2. sleeve gastrectomy

  • the stomach is converted into a long thin tube by stapling along its longitudinal axis
  • the excluded part of the stomach is removed through a small incision

3. laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding

  • a band is placed around the upper most part of the stomach separating the stomach into one small and one large portion
  • band can be adjusted to increase or decrease restriction

what are the benefits of bariatric surgery?

besides significant and sustained weight loss, there are several benefits like:

  • blood sugar levels for patients with type II diabetes in majority of patients become completely normal after surgery
  • blood pressure and cholesterol lowers
  • there is relief of sleep apnea, asthma and heart burn
  • arthritis pain decreases
  • there is a visible improvement in the emotional state of mind and self esteem

how effective is weight loss surgery?

depending on the type of surgery, anywhere from 50% to 90% of your excess body weight is lost. unlike any other means of weight loss, the weight loss can be maintained.

how safe is the surgery?

surgery is safe in expert hands and in tertiary care hospitals with a good infrastructure and equipment. in a survey of over 10,000 patients, the mortality rate for weight loss surgery was 0.3%.

when can i have children after the surgery?

specialists advise female patients to wait at least 18 months post surgery, to avoid stress of a pregnancy, during the period of rapid weight loss and allow weight to stabilize. however there are surgeries like the LAGB that can be done on patients who cannot wait for 18 months post weight loss surgery, to get pregnant.

what about medicines?

there are a few medicines that can help reduce weight, but they are not without side effects.
