Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Surgery and Liver Transplant

Dr Sanjay Govil – Consultant Surgical Gastroenterologist, Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery and Liver Transplant at Vikram Hospital Bengaluru completed his undergraduate and postgraduate surgical training from Christian Medical College, Vellore in 1989 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1992. He subsequently worked in gastrointestinal surgery and gastrointestinal oncology at CMC Vellore where he rose to the position of Professor of Surgery in 2002. Although his practice covered all aspects of gastrointestinal surgery and oncology he has worked predominantly in the field of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery since 1997. He was the first Lister Fellow in Pancreatic Surgery from Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 1998 and spent a year training in Liver Surgery at Kings College Hospital in London in 1999.He was a member of the liver transplantation team at Vellore from 1999. In 2004 he completed a Fellowship in Live Donor Liver Transplantation from Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong and The Graduate Schools of Medicine at Tokyo and Kyoto.He performed the first succesful adult Live Donor Liver Transplantation in Tamil Nadu in 2005 and the first such successful transplant in Karnataka later the same year after moving his practice to Bangalore.

He has a special interest in the treatment of Hepatocellular Carcinoma and Hilar Cholangiocarcinoma. He has performed a large number of operations for these conditions and also other pancreaticobiliary cancers. Over the past few years he has developed experience in performing liver resections in the presence of jaundice or cirrhosis.

He has experience in performing pancreatic and liver resections with vascular reconstruction when the tumour involves the portal vein. He has expertise in laparoscopic hepatobiliary surgery such as laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy, distal pancreatectomy and hepatectomy.

He has a special interest in training surgeons and physicians in the approach to hepatobiliary disorders and helping them to treat patients in their own environment.He is on the Executive Committee of the Indian Association of Surgical Gastroenterology, Indian Pancreas Club and the Indian Chapter of the International Hepatopancreaticobiliary Association.
