About Cosmetic Surgery

Our body has a layer of fat under the skin. This is essential to protect us against cold. It also gives a soft feel for the skin. Fat is a valuable form of storage of energy, since it can store more calories per gram. Thus, excess intake is stored in the form of fat.

The body preferentially stocks fat deposits in certain areas. In ladies it is predominantly below the navel, but can also accumulate in other areas. The fat accumulates in the stomach (abdominal) region in males. As the fat deposit increases, it stretches the skin overlying it and also forms a bulge. If excessive, it can interfere with breathing in the sleeping position. Fat also accumulated deeper inside and this too contributes to the bulge.

In a world where we judge people by appearances, sometimes instantly, it is possible that a bulge is not viewed very kindly. In some occupations, of high visibility. These bulges are a potential cause of loss of employment too.

This fat can be burnt off by a combination of exercise and dieting. These are now available in the fitness centers. This also ensures that the heart is kept in good condition and improves overall health.

There are a few people who have tried this but have not been able to lose fat

  • The intensity of exercise and the duration needed are not possible with the pressure on time we all have.
  • Weight loss has occurred, but the fat in one area does not seem to decrease, eg: the hips.
  • All areas are acceptable, but certain areas look awkward, eg: the arms.

For removing fat from one area and improving the contour there, liposuction is a good option.

The area to be improved is filled with a liquid which reduces pain, blood flow and makes the fat loose. The fat is then sucked out through a tube using vacuum. The hole made, is less than a centimeter wide.

The procedure can be done using anesthesia for that part (local anesthesia) or making the person unconscious (general anesthesia).

Typically, after the procedure, a compression garment is applied. The person is asked to move around 4-5 hours after the procedure, if done under general anesthesia. If the person is comfortable, they can go home an hour or two later.

Common concerns are:
  • Duration of stay - < 24 hours
  • Pain: all steps are taken to ensure a comfortable stay. It is rarely significant enough to need injections.
  • Basic activities of living (including toilet visits) are possible 4-6 hours after the procedure.
  • Return to routine work (occupation) is variable and can occur between 1 – 4 days.
  • Complications are possible and include infection, but every possible step to avoid them are taken. The complication rate is low.

Each person in this world is unique and therefore no formula for liposuction is possible. Some people may require an additional skin tightening or other procedures. The procedure, its details, stay, complications and costs are based on the examination of the Plastic Surgeon.
